Sanuk founded by the SoCal native Jeff Kelley coined a new type of comfortable and laid back footwear inspired by the outdoors. Sanuk comes from the Thai word for fun, and that’s certainly what Sanuk is about. Jeff’s vision began when he started making sandals out of indoor/outdoor carpet creating the “Fur Real” taking off in boutiques rather and not surfer style shops. His next creation was that of a sandal wrapped in wire mesh, a leopard print version, and various other styles made of poncho materials.

The Sidewalk Surfer features a super soft, high rebound molded EVA footbed featuring AEGIS antimicrobial solution for fresh feet all day long. The upper is a handmade hemp upper with frayed edge detail for a comfortable and vintage look, the inner has a contrasting poncho textile liner sitting on a Happy U outsole. Sanuk was so intent on creating progressive items that they acted on a green initiative names the R.A.S.T.A. Project. Standing for Recycled And Sustainable Trade Alliance is an initiative put in place for Sanuk to “reduce its impact on the world by providing footwear that is truly impact free.” The outsoles of R.A.S.T.A. Project footwear are made from recycled tires, taken from factories within 100km of Sanuks’ Chinese factories. The other materials used in creating these shoes had been chosen to have the least environmental impact such as “jute, hemp, natural latex, cork and recycled pet (plastic bottles).” Not only this but the packaging has been updated so that the footwear is provided in a biodegradable corn packaging which will naturally decompose.
