Asics Men’s Gel 2170 Running Sneaker Review

Asics has graced the feet of runners and non-runners alike throughout the entire world by manufacturing some of the world first athletic footwear under Onitsuka in 1949. By 1977 Asics was a true company which stood for the Latin phrase “ Anima Sana In Corpore Sano,” which means a sound mind in a sound body, which is what its founders had stayed true to.

Asics products had been introduced in the United States in 1977 and since has been a leader in great footwear. By 1990 Asics was able to open the Research Institute of Sport Science in Kobe, bringing about huge improvements in footwear, for professional and recreational athletes to have increase performance in whatever activities they might be doing.

The Asics GT-2170 is a largely popular performance running shoe. Its predecessor is the Asics GT-2160, with the 2170 offering a few improvements for added performance. This shoe is a stability shoe, offering an average arch, with a lighter weight than the 2160, clocking in at 11.4 ounces. Some of the main features of this shoe include:

• Guidance Line: Vertical flex grooves are on the sole of the shoe along with a guidance line to enhance gait efficiency.
• Space Trusstic System: A controlled mid-sole deformation and more efficient foot function through a mid-foot stabilizer creating a pocket between the Trusstic system and the mid-sole. Also is gender specific for a custom fit in the arch.
• Discrete Eyelets: Independently placed eyelets disburse lace tension, creating a customized fitting and enhance comfort in the instep region.
• Dual Density Solyte Lasting: Varying densities of Solyte lasting material in the heel and forefoot for improved comfort.
• Duomax Support System: Giving additional support and stability especially for pronation control.

Steve O from Mount Laurel NJ, “I have been an Asics fan ever since I blew out both feet to plantar fasciitis and was introduced to the 2140. Ever since the 2140 disappeared I was not entirely happy with the 2150 or 2160 due to excessive heel slippage and lacing system putting too much pressure on my instep attempting to compensate for the slippage. I have been waiting for Asics to correct these issues for years now and they have done a very good job with the 2170. The tongue is more padded. The PHF padding is thicker creating a nice heel atmosphere and lacing system does not cause the tongue to dig in to the side of my foot. I have heard about the 10 mm heel drop but don’t notice the difference. Don’t be sucked into stocking up on the 2160. Go out and try this bad boy on. I was sold in 5 minutes when it usually took me 2 hours of indecision, driving the salesmen crazy and lots of hesitation due to Asics past mistakes. I still miss the 2140 but after 3 models later Asics has finally returned the same feel and made it even better! Good job Asics!!”

Since the release of the GT-2170 in November 2011, Asics users of its earlier predecessors has been looking for great reviews and trying to understand how the product changed or improved. Overall, looks like Asics has done a great improvement on an overall well loved shoe. Heel slippage along with the lacing system had been a concern, but to those of you looking for the newest version of the 2160 here it is the GT-2170.
